Chris Clemes Fly Rods

Handcrafted in London, England.

Preserving a truly unique craft and the heritage of split cane fly fishing.

History

Chris Clemes Fly Rod and Reel Makers was formed 15 years ago by Chris Clemes. Chris realised that fine craftsmanship is a dying out in England with very few young craftsmen nowadays willing to preserve the skills which made English made products so famous.

Chris’s vision is to bring England’s finest fly rod and reel makers together in their workshops in an effort to combine their skills and preserve their heritage and to provide them with an international market place, all through Chris getting out and meeting clients face to face and putting rods in their hands.

Something special!

We understand that a split cane fly rod is a highly personal item and one which we are sure will soon become your favourite fishing companion. Each of our custom fly rods are hand split, planed and finished in the English tradition by our highly experienced rod makers. Most importantly each custom rod which leaves our workshops is built to be fished, and to last for many years to come.

Split cane fly rods, also known as bamboo fly rods, are often viewed as beautiful keepsakes, too often stored behind glass cases and admired rather than fished with. However, those that have fished with them, know that this could never be farther from the truth.

An insight into to art of building a split cane rod

1. Splitting and straightening the bamboo culm
2. Preparing the bamboo strips into equilateral triangles
3. Tapering the strips to form the splines
4. Gluing, binding and finishing the blank
5. Mounting the ferrules
6. Finishing the Rod
